Camp to promote unity among schoolchildren

PETALING JAYA: The 1Malaysia unity camp attended by the pupils involved in the Kuala Dipang bridge tragedy is similar to the Education Ministry’s Student Integration Plan for Unity (Rimup) camps, director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said.

He said that under the programme, students from various races are placed together in one camp.

Open to students in Years Four, Five and Six, the four-day camp focuses on team building and students are encouraged to eat together and socialise in order to promote racial unity and integration.

Other events include traditional cooking, cultural training and games.

The annual 1Malaysia camp for students is an initiative by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, had said the 1Malaysia concept was one of the four key performance indicators (KPIs) for the ministry and the camp was to instill a sense of unity in students.

He said the eight values of 1Malaysia are taught to the camp participants to help push the concept.

The Rimup programme is a key initiative under the nation-building thrust of the National Education Blueprint 2006-2010.
