Mun Fan in a league of its own

What say you on the issue below?

SIN KEE restaurant in Jalan Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, is synonymous with good food at reasonable prices. The shop is one of the oldest makan places of its kind around the city centre, and I have been eating there since the mid-70s, when my aunt Lorraine was working in the area. One of my fondest memories is of having their assam prawns.

Now, when it comes to a quick fix for lunch, this restaurant is famous for its mun fan (rice with meat and vegetables in gravy).

Forget the Cantonese-style of preparation; the Sin Kee mun fan is in a league of its own.

Renovated: Sin Kee restaurant in Jalan Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur.

Even the presentation itself is something of a marvel. The mun fan is served in a plate, with an upturned bowl on it.

Remove the bowl, and you will find a mound of white rice smothered with gravy, meat, Chinese sausage, vegetables and a piece of omelette.

And, at RM6.50 a serving, this particular rice dish is hardly disappointing. It is rich in flavour and comes in a generous portion, so you would not ask for seconds.

As for me, I would usually consume my mun fan with sliced red chillies (this makan place is famous for providing them fresh and crunchy) and chopped garlic in soya sauce.

But, if that is not enough, you can always order the restaurant’s signature dish: the fried mar yau (ikan kurau or threadfin) or hark chong (ikan bawal hitam or black pomfret).

Novel presentation: The mun fan comes in a plate, covered with an inverted bowl.

If you want to check out this place during lunch hour, it is advisable to head there early as the outlet is usually packed to the seams with its regular lunch crowd.

Try not to drive around this area because public parking lots are virtually impossible to locate.

Take a cab or public transport that plies through Jalan Brickfields along its route or simply take the LRT and get off at KL Sentral.
