KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wants MCA to resolve its crisis quickly so that it will not have a negative effect on the Barisan Nasional.
The prime minister said, if need be, a mediator should be found to help the two factions settle their differences.
"The faster this crisis is resolved the better for the BN. But at this point we have to wait for both sides to be willing to meet. Perhaps if there is a mediator willing to help them resolve their differences, it will help," he said after the inaugural meeting of the National Economic Advisory Council yesterday.
Najib called on both sides to keep in mind the interest of the BN or face the possibility of being rejected by voters.
"At this juncture, both are firm in their stand and appear not to want to budge. But I hope both will keep in mind the interest of the BN.
"Let not this crisis result in the community and voters rejecting the MCA and with it the BN."
On Wednesday, the MCA presidential council decided to sack party deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek on the grounds that he had tarnished the party's image with his DVD sex scandal.
Since then, Dr Chua's faction has been mobilising the MCA ground towards an extraordinary general meeting to oust party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat.
They need to get the signatures of 800 or one-third of the party central delegates to have the EGM.
Yesterday, Najib said in calling on the warring MCA factions to take into account the BN interest, he was speaking for a strong MCA.
"We want a strong MCA to represent the interest and aspiration of the Chinese community and Malaysians on the whole."
Najib reiterated his statement on Thursday that the BN would not interfere in the internal affairs of the MCA unless invited by the component party to mediate.
He had said that as the BN chairman he could not interfere in the workings of the component parties.
He said it was up to the parties to resolve their internal disputes and decide on whatever action they deemed appropriate.
