MARANG: A total of 6,800kg of cooking oil worth more than RM16,000 was seized in a raid at a warehouse in Batu Sembilan, Bukit Payung here.
State Domestic Trade and Consumerism department officers raided the warehouse at about 2pm last week following tip off from the public.
The officers discovered the warehouse owner was hoarding cooking oil, which was stored in 400 boxes at the premises.
Department deputy director Ab. Ghani Harun said initial investigations revealed the warehouse owners had been hoarding cooking oil since three months ago.
“We believe the owner hoped to profit by selling the controlled item at a higher price especially during the festive season.
“Not only was the owner hoarding the cooking oil but he did not have a proper licence to sell the item in the first place,” he said.
He added the owner received his supply from a nearby supplier.
“We will investigate the extent of this illegal activity.
“Actions will be taken against those guilty of hoarding,” he said adding that the case was classified under Section 15 of the Controlled Item Act 1961.
Ab. Ghani reminded traders and wholesalers to adhere to the regulations, as hoarding was a very serious offence.
“Those found guilty can be fined up to RM100,000 or serve up to three years in prison or both.
“We will not tolerate such an act as it affects the public greatly,” he said.
