KUANTAN: The usually drab Kampung Jawa morning market has become livelier with lanterns added to its outlook, in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.
Kuantan Municipal Council member Ngoh Tian Meng said it was the first time lanterns were installed at the location to create a festive atmosphere.
“This will allow the multi-racial residents to have a feel of the Chinese New Year besides strengthening relationships by inviting them to celebrate with us while they undergo their day to day activities,” he said after attending the lighting of the lanterns ceremony officiated by Semambu assemblyman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming recently.
Ngoh added that tourists would also be able to understand the unique culture practiced by the Chinese in a plural society.
He said the RM6,000 cost for the lanterns were borned by the market’s hawker chief Tan Siew Lan, Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong, Pang, local community leaders, hawkers and the Kampung Jawa village development and safety committee.
