Exercising for good health

What say you on the issue below?

EXERCISE is vital and an effective measure in battling non-communicable diseases (NCD), said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

So effective was exercise that it was considered a “medicine” for NCD, he added.

Unfortunately, most people neglect exercising, he said.

“Most fail to realise the importance of exercising while others are unsure what type of exercise fit their needs,” Liow said at Kolej Sains Kesihatan Bersekutu Ulu Kinta in Ipoh recently.

Having a laugh: Liow (right) and State Health committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (third from right) chatting with the award recipients after the convocation.

He had earlier attended the inaugural joint convocation of the 25 training institutes under the ministry.

Liow said his ministry would join efforts with the Youth and Sports Ministry to promote exercising as a “medicine” to combat NCD.

“Many patients who have been advised by their doctors to supplement their medication with exercise, have no clue as to how much exercise is needed and end up overdoing it to the point of passing out.

“By working hand in hand, the two ministries will come up with a massive campaign on how to prevent NCD.

“We will get people from all walks of life, including youths and university students, to take up various physical activities in order to live a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Liow urged medical officers and trainees in the Health Ministry to become proponents of healthy living for the public to emulate.

“There are fast and easy steps to living healthily but they require strong commitment,” he said.

A total of 8,835 graduates will receive their diplomas and certificates in over 40 courses throughout the week-long convocation.
