ALOR SETAR - As a result of supply shortages following the transition occurred north-east monsoon, the price of fish sold bloating around Kuala Kedah which is one of the main fishing areas in Kedah was increased up to RM12 per kilo.Kembong.

Kembong usually sold for between RM6 or RM7 a kilo.

"Now most traders get bloating wholesale price between RM8 to RM10 per kilo and we had to raise selling prices in order to get some profits," said a trader at market Kampung Tebengau, Zulkifli Azizan, 51, told Bernama.

He added before the dealers supplied more than 100 kilograms per day, but now they only get between 50 and 70 kilograms.

Man Basir, 55, said the lack of fish caused many fishermen switched to catching marine products such as squid and shrimp.

"Fishermen will catch squid at night to contribute to their earnings increasingly affected," he said.

Another trader Shafie Abdul Wahab, 55, suggested that the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) or the Department of Fisheries provides a luggage store fish at every landing jetty so the results can be saved when there is excess supply.

"The fish can then be removed to re-balance supply shortage of fish in the market," he said.
