Hotel does a good deed

What say you on the issue below?

It WAS a blessed day for thalassemia patient Leong Jia Kit when Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur donated RM45,000 from the Embrace the Gift of Life charity fund for him to undergo a stem cell transplant operation.

Jia Kit, 13, who hails from Seremban, suffers from the genetic disorder in which the body makes an abnormal form of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carry oxygen. Without treatment, excessive destruction of red blood cells occur, which leads to anemia. Jia Kit needs between RM300,000 and RM450,000 for the stem cell transplant procedure, which is scheduled for mid-December.

Kind gesture: Wai Choong Fong, the mother of Leong, receiving a mock cheque for RM45,000 from Wee at the hotel recently.

“With this donation extended to the family of Jia Kit from Shangri-La’s Embrace the Gift of Life charity fund, it is hoped that it will help to reduce their burden and Jia Kit is able to proceed with the operation immediately”, said Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur area director of communications, Rosemarie Wee.

The Embrace the Gift of Life is a fundraising charity project held annually by Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur for children in dire need of financial assistance for immediate surgeries and treatments. Since its inception in 1985, the Embrace the Gift of Life charity project has raised more than RM3mil to help many critically-ill children from all over Malaysia.

Embrace focuses on Shangri-La’s caring people project, which aims to promote the highest level of education and health support among underprivileged communities. The Sanctuary programme concentrates on Shangri-La’s care for nature project, which promotes the conservation and restoration of biodiversity.
