Dilapidated pre-war buildings set to be torn down

What say you on the issue below?

JANUARY represents the beginning for most things and people.

However, the first month of the year in 2012 will mark the end for the row of dilapidated pre-war buildings in Kampung Kepayang, which have so faithfully greeted motorists travelling along Jalan Ipoh-Gopeng for decades.

Batu Gajah District Council president Datuk Jamry Sury said it had last week put forth a proposal to the State Land and Mines Department to demolish the shophouses along the federal route between Simpang Pulai and Gopeng.

“The department will be forwarding the proposal to the state executive council to be approved and thereafter, the demolition will be carried out to enable the Public Works Department to carry out a road expansion project.

Dilapitated condition: The abandoned units of the old shophouses at Kampung Kepayang pose a danger to the motorists plying the main road.

“Among others, the proposal states that the move to demolish the buildings is being made with the consent of their owners,” Jamry said.

MetroPerak had on Nov 11 reported that the council had decided to tear down the pre-war buildings, thought to have existed since the 1880s, due to its sorry state.

Located 13km south of Ipoh, the shophouses in Kampung Kepayang are noted for their architectural designs.

In stark contrast to its heyday, the former tin-mining town has been reduced to a ghost town following the drop in demand for the commodity.

Jamry said the council had also outlined a proposal scheme for 10 of the 54 owners still residing at the shophouses.

“Neither the council nor the state government will be required to pay any form of compensation to the other 44 building owners.

“Payments will only be made to the 10 still residing there as they had requested for some form of compensation in order to find alternative housing.

“They can be reassured of being compensated accordingly once their land is acquired for the road expansion project,” Jamry said.
