Paradise in the sun

What say you on the issue below?

SUNNY skies and fluffy clouds dispelled gloomy expectations of rainy days as the plane landed on Tioman Island, and spirits were high as we passed quaint little houses and a chicken or two on the way to Berjaya Tioman Resort.

The pleasant green of the resort’s international golf course against the lush rainforest made a picturesque landscape, and a three-legged monkey bounded freely across the grass.

The four-star resort, established nearly 30 years ago and covering a massive 210 acres (about 85ha), was quiet and peaceful because of the monsoon season, resort manager Michael Tan said.

“Many people believe the monsoon season means continuous rain, but that’s not really true. Yes, there is rain, but not as often as people think – we get sunny skies and clear, beautiful days as well,” he said.

“We have three restaurants and two bars at the resort, providing guests with a lavish choice of northern Indian, Thai, western, Chinese, local and international cuisines by our chefs.”

The Coriander Seeds fine-dining restaurant, which provides northern Indian and Thai food, offers a dessert unique to Berjaya Tioman – homemade mango ice cream.

Chunks of the tropical fruit mixed into the mango-infused ice cream make a great end to any meal, and certainly is a must-try for every guest.

Boasting many recreational activities, from swimming with sharks (not man-eating ones), sea turtles and marine life to taking a swing on the green with a buddy, the resort prides itself as being a one-stop resort for everyone.

“The in-house PADI five-star Gold Palm Resort, where guests can learn and practise scuba diving, is one of our unique attractions, and we are the only resort on the island to have an 18-hole golf course,” Tan said.

Berjaya Tioman has 268 rooms and suites in scattered chalets across the resort. The chalets as well as main buildings showcase the intricacy of Malay architecture and design.

“Our rooms, which range from standard chalet to junior suite, are each designed for the guests’ safety, comfort and convenience. The rooms range in size from 32.51 sq metres to 41.8 sq metres,” rooms division manager Pravir Mishra said.

The resort also houses the Ayura Spa, giving guests the chance to pamper themselves during their visit to the island.

Berjaya Hotels and Resorts (BHR) corporate director Abel Nelson Nang said guests can expect hospitality and simple elegance in any of the company’s four Malaysian properties.

“We are a one-stop hospitality provider. Our brand values, namely support, trust, outstanding delivery and passion (STOP), ensure that holidays with Berjaya make great times and memories,” he said.

The three-day media excursion was organised in conjunction with BHR’s 3, 2, 1, Stop! Campaign, which offers corporate and leisure packages to Berjaya Tioman, Berjaya Penang Hotel, Berjaya Langkawi Resort and the Berjaya Times Square Hotel in Kuala Lumpur at great rates.

For every package bought during the campaign, which runs until February next year, RM1 will be donated to an education fund under one of BHR’s corporate social responsibility initiatives – A Dollar a Scholar.
