IN AN effort to promote global peace, a first ever 355km-long human chain from Changkat Jering, near Taiping to Putrajaya would be formed in February next year.
Organised by ‘Ziarah for Peace’ a non-governmental organisation; the formation is expected to draw the participation up to 1.5 million people from all walks of life.
The organisation founder and president Mohd Zamri Mohd Nordin said the exact time and date for the assembly would be officially announced in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 9.
Forming a human chain with invited guests, including Taiping Municipal Council president Shahrom Datuk Abd Malek, at the event’s launch recently, Mohd Zamri said the name Taiping meant peace forever and the event would elevate the town’s name as a catalyst for peace on the world stage.
“Today’s event launch is part of a series of events that we have organized since the beginning of the year.
“On Oct 4, we launched the ‘Ziarah’ seminar followed by the ‘Ziarah’s’ portal launch on Nov 9, both held in Kuala Lumpur,” said Mohd Zamri.
He said the word ziarah, which meant the act of visiting each other, was chosen for the project following an encounter with a villager in Changkat Jering during the funeral of a close relative.
“‘Ziarah’ is not limited to just a visit to a tomb, cemetery, an ill person or a funeral as it can also be practiced during happier occasions.
“It stems from the Arabic word, ‘Ziyarat’ and encourages us to know and be closer to one another, which leads to the formation of a relationship.
“Ziarah For Peace’ hopes to create a community that is united with the realisation that there is no peace without sacrifice, no sacrifice without love and no love without relationships,” he said.
Mohd Zamri said the ‘Ziarah For Peace’ initiative had received the full backing of the International Association of Educators for World Peace (IAEWP).
The IAEWP, represented by its global strategy and development vice president Steve Rajan Farouk, is a non-governmental organisation designated as a peace messenger for the United Nations.
Farouk said Taiping and Malaysia would become a global peace destination, while the feat could be poised to enter the Guinness Book of World Records, should it turn out to be a success.
“Similar human chains had been held before but none exceeded more than 10km long and most of them were held out of political reasons unlike this one,” he said.
