KARATE exponent V. Jayaseelan wants to excel in both sports and studies.
The 25-year-old, a two-time gold medallist in the Malaysia Games, took a break from karate as he was recuperating from a knee injury.
While going through a rehabilitation programme, the burly youngster, decided to concentrate on studies at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Seri Kembangan.
Jayaseelan, who won the gold medal in the 2006 and 2008 Malaysia Games, is a pursuing a degree in Corporate Communications.
“My karate career had disrupted my studies. Age was also catching up. But with the knee injury, I had to skip training.
“So I felt it would be appropriate to complete my studies while going for the rehabilitation programme,’’ said Jayaseelan.
He was one of the four sports personalities, from a group of students, given the task to organise a campaign — Students vs Campus Crimes — as part of the education programme.
The other three were Muhammad Hafizuddin Sahadan (athletics), Nurul Asfahlina Mohamed Johari (taekwondo) and Nor Shafeeqah Yahya (lawn bowls).
Jayaseelan said they had invited three personalities — Hafiz Hamidun, Kamal Affendi and Amira Tilu — for the talk show.
“All three were provided with chance to give their views on the subject. It was a live show and aired on Radio Putra FM. All the students were given responsibilities. They were in charge of organising an exhibition, a show as well as the opening and closing ceremonies,’’ said Jayaseelan.
Nor Shafeeqah also has taken a short break from lawn bowls to complete her studies while Nurul Asfahlina, who won a silver in the recent SEA Games in Indonesia, and pole vaulter Muhammad Hafizuddin are training with their respective coaches.
Jayaseelan said he was keen to resume training and wanted to be considered for the World Championships next year.
“I am now concentrating on physical training and I want to be in good condition when I rejoin the training programme,’’ said Jayaseelan, who won a silver medal in the 2007 SEA Games in Korat.
Next year, if everything goes as planned, he is keen to be in the Malaysian team for the World Championships.
“I won a silver in the individual category and gold in the team event in the 2008 World Championships.
“I have to train more diligently to regain my place in the national squad,’’ added Jayaseelan.
