MORE than 500 children took part in the Kuntum-Marigold Holiday Enrichment Workshops recently.
The workshops ran for four days, with the first three held at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort, and the final workshop at Jungle Lodge, Batu 12 3/4, Gombak.
Marigold UHT Milk was the main sponsor with Tropicana Golf and Country Resort sponsoring the venue and food and beverage for the first three workshops.
On the first day of the workshop, with the title “Leader of Tomorrow”, the participants were taught concepts such as teamwork, leadership and communication skills through group games and team activities.
The participants were divided into smaller groups of seven to 10 and each group was assigned an adult facilitator who guided the participants through the activities.
The main highlight of the programme was the “Fantasy Journey”, a treasure hunt activity which required the participants to complete as many station games as they could such as “Space Battle”.
Each group selected one person to be the ‘life force’ and the rest were ‘defenders’.
They later formed themselves into a spaceship seated on the floor.
The ‘defenders’ will have to protect the ‘life force’ from the opposing group.
The objective of this game was to learn the importance of teamwork and knowing one’s role.
Later, the partipants were involved in The Super Show, an activity involving role-playing and acting show where famous cartoons were re-enacted with a leadership twist.
The second-day workshop, “Mind-Mapping for Kids” conducted by Paul Chan and Joy Lim from Nuclei Training was also full of fun.
About 150 children registered for this workshop, including two siblings from SK Lubuk Terua, Lanchang in Temerloh, Nur Hazrin, 11, and Mohd Harris Mohd Halimi, 9.
Participants learned the many ways of mind mapping such as making better notes, reading, and writing essay.
The workshop on the third day was “Stand Up and Speak”.
Since speaking with confidence is usually a problem for many people especially children, the main purpose of this workshop was to improve their communication skill in English.
Over 130 children joined this workshop that helped them develop self-confidence in public speaking.
Confidence and public speaking skills are not something most of us are born with and all the participants were given activities to put the skills into practice.
Ending the series was the ‘Eco-Warriors! programme, an outdoor activity at Jungle Lodge, Batu 12 3/4, Gombak.
The main purpose of this programme was to encourage love of nature.
It emphasised the awareness of conservation and environmental protection, which required knowledge, understanding, change in attitude and participation.
In addition, the programme also helped to create a sense of responsibility towards the cleanliness of the environment and build self-confidence in facing the challenges.
All the participants enjoyed the programme so much that some of them declared it was the best jungle adventure they ever had!.
