KENINGAU: Parti Bersatu Sabah will launch its Project 1PBS 2010 in a move to double its membership within a year.
This was in response to Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s call for component parties to enhance their internal cohesiveness and widen their grassroots support, party deputy president Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said.
PBS president Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan would roll out the project before the party congress on Nov 7, he said.
The project aims to double PBS’ current membership from 90,000 members to 180,000 as part of the party’s 25th anniversary next year.
At present, the multi-racial oldest party in Sabah has 60 divisions in the state and in Labuan, each having between 1,000 and 6,000 members.
The 12-month membership drive exercise will involve all divisions and be implemented as a “1 member get 1 member” programme and targeted at youths, young professionals and people who are not politically active.
“The ultimate goal is to assist in rebranding Barisan Nasional and strengthen the coalition’s grassroots support and influence in Sabah,” said Dr Ongkili, who opened the joint annual general meetings of the party’s Sook and Nabawan divisions here on Friday.
Some 500 PBS delegates attended the event, including party secretary-general Datuk Radin Malleh and vice-president Datuk Michael Asang.
