SEREMBAN: MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat last night revealed that some delegates were intimidated by supporters of his former deputy Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek to sign a petition to call for an extraordinary general meeting (EGM).

“When I go around to meet the grassroots, they tell me that they have been made to sign the petition under duress. We have to avert this,” he told reporters after meeting delegates from Negri Sembilan MCA.

Ong, who is also the Transport Minister, said he was also prepared to accept whatever resolutions to be tabled by the supporters of his rival at the EGM.

Asked what would happen should his rival went ahead to hold a separate EGM, Ong said he did not wish to prejudge this.

Ong said he decided to call for an EGM because he did not want the delegates to be intimidated.

Present at the closed-door session were delegates from six of the eight divisions in the state. The heads of the Seremban division, Datuk Peter Lai, and Rembau division Datuk Goh Siow Huat were absent.

However, some members from the Rembau division were present.

Ong also received good support from about 100 of the 122 delegates who were present.

Ong said he decided to meet the delegates as the grassroots had the right to know about the problems in the party.

“I told them that I decided to call for the EGM to avert unncessary problems and hassles.

“This is the best thing to do and let the delegates make their choice,” he added.

Present at last night’s event were MCA secretray-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng, vice-presidents Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Datuk Kong Cho Ha, Wanita chief Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun and Youth chief Datuk Wee Ka Siong.

In PETALING JAYA, MCA central delegates who have been offered money to sign forms calling for an EGM to be convened have been urged to lodge reports wtoith the authorities.

“This means the Police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission or MCA itself,” said party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng.
