JIM questions inconsistency in the enforcement of Kartika’s caning

What say you on the issue below?

PETALING JAYA: The caning sentence imposed on Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno should not be looked at emotionally or sensationally, said Jemaah Islah Malaysia (JIM).

“Why do many still question the decision when the Kuantan Syariah High Court has gone through the proper procedures?

“Doesn’t that amount to contempt of court?” asked movement’s women’s chief Assoc Prof Dr Harlina Halizah Siraj.

“How is there a state of inconsistency in the enforcement of sentences? Her sentence was imposed by the judge based on evidence and the submissions of the prosecution but the enforcement authorities are not prepared to carry out the punishment?”

She said this yesterday on the recent controversy surrounding part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, who was sentenced to receive six strokes of the rotan for consuming alcohol.

Dr Harlina asked whether the predominantly Muslim leadership and the Muslims in Malaysia were “really dedicated and ready to practise the teachings of Islam.

“When will the Muslims be free to lead a religious life outlined by Islam?” she added.

She urged all those who were taking advantage of the confusion and using the Kartika’s caning sentence as proof of injustice to and the oppression of women under Syariah law to stop doing so.

“Wanita JIM demands the syariah judiciary in Malaysia to show full commitment and fitting wisdom to double its efforts to increase the institution’s credibility and preserve the good name of Islam, locally and internationally.”

She said the Kartika issue should become an eye-opener to the necessity for Muslims to return to the true teachings of Islam.
