THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will continue to support the PJ Open squash championships.

MBPJ secretary Puasa Mohd Taib said the PJ Open squash championships was the only competition catering to all age groups.

“We have reason to be proud of our association with the championships, which is being held for the 29th consecutive year. We consider the championships to be the only one for social squash players,” Puasa said after the recent sponsorship ceremony for this year’s competition.

The championships, offering a total purse of RM11,000 and sponsored by Milo, Prince and Sports Toto, will be held at the PJ Astaka Sports Complex from Oct 16 to 24.

The championships has six categories – men’s Division One, Division Two, Division Three, veterans 40-49 and 50 and above, as well as the women’s Division Two.

In an effort to provide a platform for trainees in the MBPJ junior development programme to gauge their progress, the organisers have also included three age groups – Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 – for both boys and girls.

The age group categories are important as they will determine the rankings of the trainees in Selangor.

Organising secretary Mary Ong said the championships was the launching pad for several current national players.

“We hope to see more players from the MBPJ programme making it to the state and national training programmes,” Ong said.
