PETALING JAYA, Aug 23 The world food industry has been developing products based on Western eating habits, climatic conditions and lifestyle which are unsuitable for Malaysians, according to an eminent practitioner of complementary therapy.
Dr V.M. Palaniappan said that, for example, Westerners recommended enrichment of Vitamin D for all foods manufactured for the people of the tropics.
"This should be considered as the biggest mockery of all times in the history of mankind because people of the tropics get abundant Vitamin D from natural sunshine all year round.
"It is the Europeans and their cattle that do not get the Vitamin D due to lack of sunshine," he told Bernama here on Sunday.
Yet, he pointed out, the local manufacturers of bread, butter, margarine, glucose, corn flakes, milk powder, chocolate drinks and a whole host of other foods enrich them with Vitamin D.
Dr Palaniappan a former associate professor of botany at the University of Malaya, said Westerners advocated even other vitamins and minerals without proper evaluation of the foods consumed by people living in the tropics.
He said Asian foods were naturally well-balanced and were fit and adequate for people in the tropics, but these were evaluated to be inadequate by Westerners who claimed so after comparing the needs of their own body size.
In the tropics, people consumed a lot of local vegetables and fruits which were best suited to their health needs, but Westerners recommended their pears, apples and oranges, he said.
On food preservation, Dr Palaniappan said Asian traditional methods were harmless unlike the Western technique of using food conditioners which was harmful to the body.
On drugs, he said a large number of them were developed for treating illnesses of big-bodied Europeans and Americans.
Relatively small-bodied Asians consuming these drugs can subject themselves to overdose, thus resulting in toxicity problems, he added.
