GEORGE TOWN: Sabah Wanita MCA chief Datuk Agnes Shim Tshin Nyuk is the new chief of the women’s section of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Hua Zong).

She polled 37 votes in the section’s election at the Penang Chi-nese Town Hall yesterday to defeat incumbent chief Ooi Siew Kim by nine votes.

The election for Hua Zong’s parent body will be held today.

Businessman Tan Yew Sing from Selangor is up against Pahang ty-coon Tan Sri Pheng Yin Huah in the contest for the presidency.

Tan, the chief executive officer of Inti Education Group, is president of the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall.

Pheng, the Kinsteel Bhd and Per-waja Holdings Bhd managing director, has been president of the Pa-hang Chinese Assembly Hall since 1991.

The election is being closely wat-ched as the new line-up is expected to shape the future of the federation that groups 7,000 Chinese guilds and associations through 13 state Chinese Assembly Halls nationwide.
