Ops Sikap not having desired effect, says NIOSH chairman

What say you on the issue below?

PETALING JAYA: The effectiveness of Ops Sikap should be reviewed and its shortcomings rectified, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health said.

Its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said there was only a slight reduction in road accidents and fatality rate since the campaign was carried out.

Lee also urged employers to help reduce road accidents involving their workers.

He said 23% of the reports made with the Social Security Organisation (Socso) involved motorcycles or pillion riders travelling to or from work.

“Employers can assist by organising road safety courses to help improve the employees’ driving skills and educate them on road manners.

“They should give serious thought to this because the loss of an employee’s life is a loss of an asset to the organisation,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Bernama reports that 12 more deaths were recorded during Ops Sikap XX, bringing the total so far to 222.

Motorcyclists and pillion riders topped the list of fatalities at five, followed by pedestrians (four) and motorists (three), Bukit Aman traffic branch statistics showed yesterday.

A total of 1,003 accidents were recorded on municipal roads (414), federal roads (277), state roads (173), highways (77) and other roads (62), and 11,783 summonses were issued for various offences yesterday.

The two-week operation, aimed at reducing road accidents during the Aidilfitri celebrations, ends today.
