One EGM will do for MCA

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA will start the preparatory work for the extraordinary meeting (EGM) called by party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat after Sept 4.

Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, who was sacked as MCA deputy president by the MCA presidential council over his DVD sex scandal last week, had described Ong’s move to call the EGM as a “blatant use of executive power”.
“It was the grassroots who first started the ball rolling in
petitioning for an EGM. Ong’s move in calling another EGM
is aimed at confusing the members.”
Ong made the surprise move in calling the EGM on Monday under Article 30.1 of the party’s constitution to allow members to reflect on the direction in which the party should be heading.

Last week, Dr Chua’s supporters initiated a signature campaign among central delegates to convene an EGM of their own under Article 30.3, whereby they would need 800 signatures.
Party secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng, in a statement released after chairing a meeting on the coming EGM, said those who wished to requisition an EGM should submit their agenda to
the party headquarters on or before Friday.
This will enable the headquarters to compile the various
agendas and avoid conducting more than one EGM.
The preparatory work includes sending out notices for the EGM to all the central delegates to enable the meeting to be conducted before Sept 30.
He said the party had yet to make a decision on the date, venue, time and agenda of the EGM.
It was learnt that the EGM might be held either on Sept 13 or after the Hari Raya celebrations on Sept 20.
Dr Chua had likened the current party problems to the 1984 party crisis when acting president Neo Yee Pan sacked vice-president Tan Koon Swan and 13 other leaders and members from the party.
Within 48 hours of the expulsion, 1,499 delegates sent in a joint petition calling for an EGM to be held to nullify the expulsion orders and to appoint a special committee to probe and handle the phantom membership issue.
However, this was ignored by the incumbent leadership, which refused to hold the EGM. This forced the Tan faction to bring the issue to court, causing the party to fall into a state of near anarchy.
Former MCA deputy president Tan Sri Lee Kim Sai said partymembers
could, at the same EGM, deal with the two issues of confidence in
Ong’s leadership, and the recent sacking of Dr Chua.
“No need to have two EGMs. Just one is enough, with these two agendas.
One is for the vote of confidence and the other on Dr Chua. Let the delegates decide,” he told Bernama.
“This is just like a company. One EGM with two resolutions. It would be clean and sweet.
“If the delegates decide to support the motion of confidence in the MCA president, everybody, including Dr Chua and his supporters, must respect the decision.

“Similarly, if the majority of the delegates vote against Dr Chua’s sacking, then the decision must be respected.
