RESIDENT Omar Khalid, who lives in Bandar Sri Permaisuri Cheras, said he was often nauseated by the stench from the lake behind the Villa Laman Tasik townhouses.
He claimed that the lake was filled with filth brought in by the water that flowed from Sg Kerayong.
In an e-mail to The Star, he wrote that whenever there is a downpour, the filth increases and the area resembles a waste area.
“There is no waste trap at Sg Kerayong and the smell is unbearable at most times,” he said.
When StarMetro visited the lake last Saturday morning, it was clean and clear, except for some plastic bags and dead fish at the bank.
Three men were seen fishing and in the middle of the lake, there were birds feeding.
Even a number of black garbage disposal bags were seen placed along the grassy slope, indicating that people were maintaining the cleanliness of the place.
However, a gust of wind did carry an unpleasant smell, perhaps from the bits of waste and dead fish.
Bandar Tun Razak MP Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s special assistant Chin Chee Kong, who was also present, said there was regular maintenance at the lake site.
“It’s a beautiful lake. As Sg Kerayong meanders through various residential areas before ending up here, it inadvertently carries along waste, too.
“However, following complaints from some people in April about the filth at the lake, we reported to Kuala Lumpur City Hall and cleaning work was carried out,” said Chin.
He also said there was a waste trap on the side where the water was diverted out.
“However, I shall monitor this area closely with the authorities concerned.
“Maybe the garbage bags can be disposed of quickly to prevent dogs from digging in and causing the waste to spill out,” said Chin.
