Kota Siputeh seat issue 'puts EC on firing line'

What say you on the issue below?

ALOR STAR: Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the decision by the Election Commission on the status of the Kota Siputeh state seat will have a big impact on its credibility.

The issue came about after the incumbent Datuk Abu Hassan Sarif, of Barisan Nasional, was absent from two consecutive state assembly meetings.

Under Section 51 of the state constitution, an assemblyman who did so without the consent of the speaker should vacate his seat.

It was reported that the EC would hold a special meeting today to decide whether or not the seat should be declared vacant.

Azizan said according to the state constitution, Kedah assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Abdul Isa Ismail could have declared the seat vacant, but to ensure that the case would not lead to a mess as has happened in Perak, the matter was referred to the EC.

Azizan said the EC should consider the case according to Section 51 of the state constitution.

"However, a lot of questions would be raised if the EC decides that the Kota Siputeh seat should not be vacated and the state assemblyman remains."

Isa said he had not recei-ved any information from the EC.

"I have not been informed of anything so far, including about EC's special meeting tomorrow. However, we are prepared to accept their decision."
