KUANTAN: All hospitals have been directed to set up a group of specialists to attend to A(H1N1) flu patients.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said such a move was necessary due to the existence of secondary complications in some patients.
“Prompt treatment must be given to these patients suffering from secondary complications so that they have a better chance of recovery.
“Previously, only one specialist was assigned to attend to these patients but it is found that this method was not effective enough due to other complications,” he said after paying a visit to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here yesterday.
Liow also said there were 301 new influenza A(H1N1) cases recorded over the past 24 hours but no new deaths.
He said of the total 1,198 patients with influenza-like illness in the country, 255 had been warded for further observation.
“Most of them are just having normal fever. The death toll remains at 73.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely,” he said, adding that there were also 55 A(H1N1) patients warded in intensive care units (ICU) nationwide.
“The number of people with influenza-like illness has recorded a significant drop from some 700 cases daily last month to 244 cases daily. We will release the latest information including deaths, if any,” he said.
In Kuala Lumpur, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said that of the 55 patients in ICU, 38 were from the high risk group, comprising those with chronic diseases, respiratory problems, morbid obesity, pregnant women, new mothers, children and senior citizens.
He also urged those with H1N1 symptoms to get anti-viral treatment at the nearest clinic or hospital immediately.
