Confusing time for motorists in Klang

What say you on the issue below?

THE traffic system in North Klang has been completely changed from Sept 1 and the situation has left motorists and traders fuming.

Motorists claim that the traffic diversion has forced motorists to be on the road for longer periods while business operators felt that the new routes had driven away customers.

Stuck: Jalan Pasar is now one of the most congested spots in town after being turned into a one-way street.

Klang Consumers Association president A. Devadass said he had received numerous complaints from motorists and business operators over the traffic diversion.

Under the new system, Devadass said motorists from the town centre were required to make long detours in order to find their way out of town.

Previously, he said, it only took motorists between two and three minutes to get into the Bulatan Seratus from any part of North Klang but the situation was different now.

“Motorists from Jalan Batu Tiga Lama could head straight to the Bulatan Seratus, those from Jalan Taiping could use Jalan Nenas en route to Jalan Kapar before arriving at the Bulatan Seratus while motorists from Jalan Pasar and Jalan Gopeng areas could also do the same.

“Now, all the motorists have to get onto Jalan Pasar and Jalan Goh Hock Huat, go across Jalan Kapar and Jalan Meru before getting into Jalan Sireh in order to arrive at the Bulatan Seratus,” he said.

The route change, Devadass said, had created massive congestion at areas such as Jalan Pos Baru, Jalan Kepayang, Jalan Taiping and Jalan Gopeng areas.

He said the congestion at these areas was getting from bad to worse especially during peak hours.

“Jalan Pos Baru and Jalan Kepayang are busy because of the bus terminal while Jalan Taiping is the shopping area and Jalan Gopeng is growing into a new business centre,” he added.

Most parts of Jalan Nenas, Jalan Meru, Jalan Kapar and Jalan Sireh have been turned into one-way streets.

“Look at my shop, it used to be full with customers but there are hardly any nowadays,” Devadass said.

H. C. Gan of Good Store Fashion at Jalan Batu Tiga Lama said her business had dropped by 50% due to the situation.

She said the traffic diversion had robbed her of her pre-Hari Raya Puasa business.

“Business is very poor and we have to close shop early now,’’ she added,

Klang OCPD Asst Comm Mohamed Mat Yusop said they had deployed traffic police personnel at strategic points so that motorists would be familiarised with the system.

He said the system had proved to be effective and helped to reduce traffic congestion in the town.

“It should get better once motorists are used to it,’’ he said

An official from Klang Public Works Department said several federal roads including Jalan Nenas, Jalan Sireh, Jalan Kapar and Jalan Meru were affected by the new traffic system.

He said the traffic diversion was introduced by the Klang Municipal Council following a study carried out in 2005 by a private consultant on the road system in the town.

“We have almost done our part which includes putting up road signs and removing dividers,’’ he said, adding that the department spent more than RM2mil for the purpose.
