SM Kuen Cheng will encourage their students to take part in the grand final of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Berjaya Times Square on Oct 25.
SM Kuen Cheng basketball coach Kan Kim Loon said they would be sending about 20 teams to the challenge.
“We have been traditionally active in basketball. Taking part in the 3 on 3 challenge is part of our training programme to prepare them for competitions. Playing in the exciting and fast paced 3 on 3 challenge also gives them opportunities to improve their individual skills,’’ said Kan after a two-hour coaching clinic at the school recently.
The clinic, conducted by former national player Tan Kee Hian and current international Wee Chuan Chin, was part of the promotional programmes initiated by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia.
The participants, most of them Form Two students, were put through various drills involved in basketball. The students, having played in various age group competitions for their school, were quick to adapt to the training programme.
The participants went through the warm-up and stretching exercises in a group before the two trainers started the ball rolling with the proper ball-handling skills comprising positioning, dribbling, shooting and passing.
Tan said it was a joyful training session as the participants were prepared to go through the drills with enthusiasm.
“The participants had the basic skills. So our work was made simpler. They have the abilities to excel in basketball. We hope to see the players from SM Kuen Cheng make an impact in the streetball challenge,’’ said Tan.
The grand final is the culmination of the four-leg circuit held at Petaling Jaya, Johor Baru, Klang and Penang.
Ossia World of Golf are the organisers of the challenge while the venue sponsors are Berjaya Times Square; Milo are the official beverage; StarMetro the official media and Fly FM the official radio. The challenge is sanctioned by the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA).
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were expecting about 400 teams to register for the grand final.
“This year we have seen an increase in the number of participating teams. We are pleased to play a role in the development and promotion of basketball among youngsters,’’ said Saw.
