PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission has agreed to PAS’ request that postal votes in the Bagan Pinang by-election be placed under the safe-keeping of the returning officer instead of at the army camp or police station.
EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusoff said the commission had agreed to this as the request was “reasonable”.
“During a meeting on Sept 28, PAS representatives had raised the issue, claiming that leaving the bags containing postal votes at the police station or the army camp would be unsafe.
“Even though we assured them that it would be safe, nevertheless, we have agreed to their request as it is reasonable,” he said.
The EC chairman also said the rule to not allow political parties to campaign inside army camps was not stipulated by the commission.
“This is a rule stipulated by the army. It has nothing to do with us.
“They do not allow campaigning be held in camps because these are high security areas,” he said.
